Most of this work was completed during a temporary stay in Anchorage, Alaska. To some viewers, these pieces may express a sense of isolation and emotional disconnect within the subject of the painting. The disconnection that I experienced with my new surroundings in Anchorage could have contributed to the general tone of these paintings. Alaska is a place of indescribable beauty with abundant wildlife and vast regions of pristine land; Anchorage, however, is a cluster of predictable suburbs void of any sign of an arts culture. While there is nothing unique with this environment from many others that comprise suburban America, it was for me a stark contrast to my more urban and fundamentally creative based community and home in Portland, Oregon.

Though my immediate environment may have influenced these particular paintings, in general, I tend to gravitate towards the subject or idea of emotional fragility. These emotional complexities or vulnerabilities are what I am most interested in. Working within the context of these emotional traits and exploring how they relate to the subjects of my paintings helps keep me motivated and productive. I'm also interested in communication, or more specifically, the absence of communication. The triptych format has enabled me to explore the idea of miscommunication through visual representation. Its sequential nature allows me to examine some of the misdirected emotions and feelings such as apathy, isolation and alienation which can often times serve as painful consequences from the lack of communication.
